7m Unstayed flagpole installed using a sectional 2m steel base concealed within the roof void at Grade I listed Maxstoke Castle, Warwickshire
Harrisons were engaged to design and erect an unstayed 7m flagpole and base arrangement onto one of the towers of 14th Century Maxstoke Castle.
Using the existing opening in the lead lined roof left by an old flagpole and a 2m tall roof void within the tower a sectional steel base was designed to be concealed within the void and secured to the underlying joists. Once in position the 7m pole was hoisted up the outside of the building and secured to the steel base. The existing lead flashing was used to wrap around the base of the pole to shed any rainwater away and lightening protection running down the interior of the of the pole was connected to the existing framework. This method of installing the unstayed flagpole avoids any additional interference with the roof and the risks associated with this.
